Sent a few nominations to the American Dialect Society’s word of the year and word of the decade poll.

For 2009 words, I chose birther, tea party and beer summit on the grounds that a person sent in time from 2008 might not comprehend a sentence like “birthers held signs at the tea-party protest”. One might say “beer summit, how dated!” which is the point of these things: WOTY for 2005 was truthiness, 2006 plutoed (nowadays we’d probably say plutowned), 2007 subprime, and 2008 bailout.

For decade words, I chose the adjective meta which is very zeitgeisty (and diagnostic) for the “hip young people online” subculture to which we all deny being a part of. I also picked meme because I was thinking about meta and then I remembered that Xzibit “yo dawg” meme which is meme about things being meta (how “meta”). No real chance in hell for these tetragrams (at least against blog), but I wanted linguists, lexicographers and philologists of all stripes to think about them.

I still have to come up with more interesting words to send in, so I’m opening this up to answers and I’ll send in whatever submissions I get. For the record, tweet and tw- appeared on the 2008 list.

i just dropped my car off to be serviced and instead of waiting in the shop I decided to take advantage of this GORGEOUS autumn day and go for a walk in the surrounding neighborgood. Weezer - (If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To Live on Letterman

Reasons you should watch this video: 1). The full Tonight Show orchestra playing along with this song really makes it amazing. 2). Weezer are amazing performers. 3). Rivers Cuomo really gets into the song and looks like he really loves his music. 4). The audience’s applaud is pretty amazing at the end and I was left inspired by the whole thing. So what are you waiting for!? Watch it!

After reading the Weezer essay in Klosterman’s latest book, things make so much more sense to me, I’m seeing clearly.

Madison tops list of most charitable cities in the nation:

Madison has been ranked the most charitable city in the nation, according to Men’s Health Magazine.

Men’s Health’s ratings were based on how much a city’s residents gave in online contributions during the holiday season, to Goodwill Industries International in December, to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, and to the Marine Toys for Tots program.

According to the magazine, Madison was the only city to receive an A-plus for its charitable spirit. The other top 10 cities earned an A or A-minus. Milwaukee ranked 46th with a C-plus.

I just left the Dane County United Way Celebration for Giving where 2009’s major donors were recognized. Our United Way campaign this year raised $16,660,000 (give or take a few thousand). THAT’S SIXTEEN MILLION DOLLARS PEOPLE! IN A RECESSION! I’m obviously excited about this because, you know, it keeps me in my job, but also because it’s just so cool to see the community come together to do good.
